Doll in a Redingote and Tall Crowned Bonnet

c 1837

The doll wears a pretty printed cotton redingote (a lightweight unlined coat open down the front).

Hairstyles were still tall and elaborate, and in order to be able to retain the styled hair, the bonnets had to accommodate the styling without damage. Hence the tall steepled crown, as somewhere to tuck it all safely.
