Doll in a Day Dress

c 1832

Grödnerthal doll wearing a day dress of 1832, in printed tobacco brown cotton with black decorations.

The dress has the dropped shoulder line of the period, with "leg-o-mutton" or gigot style sleeves, which were all the rage in the early years of the 1830's.

The hair is dressed in an "Apollo knot". Hairstyles were tall and elaborate throughout the decade, often with loops of hair or plaits wired into place, and embellished with flowers, pearls, ribbons etc. It was often set to one side, or arranged asymmetrically.
